Jasprit Bumrah Cleared for Afghanistan T20Is, Harshit Rana Ruled Out With Fresh Injury
Jasprit Bumrah Cleared for Afghanistan T20I Series
India have received a major boost ahead of their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, with Jasprit Bumrah declared fit by the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru.
Bumrah, along with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar, was initially selected subject to fitness clearance. All three players have now been cleared to feature in the series, which begins on September 13.
Washington Sundar has already joined the squad and took part in an afternoon training session at the Kotla on Thursday. Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy are expected to join the team on Friday.
Harshit Rana Ruled Out After Fresh Injury
While Bumrah's return is positive news for India, fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out after suffering another injury during his fitness assessment.
Rana was previously ruled out of India's T20 World Cup campaign in February after suffering a hamstring tear during a warm-up match. He subsequently missed IPL 2026 before returning to the national squad for the tour of Ireland and England.
He later suffered another hamstring problem that kept him out of the Zimbabwe tour.
According to the BCCI, Rana had been progressing well during rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence. However, he suffered a rectus femoris strain while bowling during a match simulation on September 7 and has now been ruled out.
Yash Thakur Replaces Harshit Rana
Following Rana's injury, Yash Thakur has been named as his replacement for both the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games.
Thakur had previously replaced Rana during India's Zimbabwe tour. He made his international debut during that series and finished with four wickets in two matches.
Bumrah Returns After Injury Break
Bumrah's fitness comes after a period away from international cricket.
The pace bowler missed the third ODI in England in July and subsequently sat out India's two Tests in Sri Lanka after experiencing a recurrence of his left knee injury.
His return to the Afghanistan T20Is will give him an opportunity to regain his bowling rhythm before India's upcoming Test commitments.
Washington Sundar had also suffered a hamstring injury during the England tour, while Nitish Kumar Reddy picked up a quadriceps injury during India's ODI series against Afghanistan in June.
Gavaskar Backs Bumrah's Return to T20 Cricket
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar recently highlighted the importance of Bumrah getting competitive overs under his belt before the Test series against New Zealand.
Gavaskar said that the gap between the Asian Games and the New Zealand Tests makes the Afghanistan T20Is a useful opportunity for Bumrah to return to rhythm.
He also pointed to Mohammed Siraj's lack of recent match practice in Sri Lanka as an example of why bowlers need sufficient competitive cricket before major Test assignments.
According to Gavaskar, getting enough bowling under his belt will be particularly important for Bumrah ahead of the New Zealand series.
India vs Afghanistan T20I Series
India's three-match T20I series against Afghanistan is scheduled to begin on September 13. Bumrah's clearance provides India with an experienced option in the pace attack, while Harshit Rana's latest injury has forced another change to the squad.
With the New Zealand Test series also on the horizon, Bumrah's workload and match rhythm are expected to remain an important part of India's planning.
