Manchester to Host G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2027: Trump and World Leaders Set to Attend
Manchester will take centre stage in global diplomacy in 2027 as the city prepares to host the G20 leaders’ summit. World leaders, including US President Donald Trump, are expected to travel to Manchester for the two-day event.
The G20 summit is scheduled for 27 and 28 November 2027 at the Manchester Central Convention Centre. The event is expected to be the largest international summit ever held in the city.
Manchester Chosen to Host 2027 G20 Summit
Manchester was selected as the host city earlier in 2026, before Andy Burnham became UK prime minister. With the UK set to take over the G20 presidency, preparations for the summit are now expected to accelerate.
Hundreds of people from the local community are expected to be involved in arrangements surrounding the summit, while additional events are planned in different parts of the country during the UK's G20 presidency.
Andy Burnham to Welcome Donald Trump
Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who previously served as mayor of Greater Manchester, said he was pleased that he would be welcoming the US president to Manchester.
The relationship between Burnham and Trump has attracted attention in the past. During Burnham’s time as mayor, he had said that he would not welcome a visit by Trump.
Trump also previously referred to Burnham as the “mayor of a town”. Burnham said that during their first phone conversation he made clear that Manchester was an important city and that both sides should move beyond their earlier comments.
Speaking ahead of his meeting with Trump in New York, Burnham said politicians make different statements during their careers, but that the focus should now be on the current moment and working relationships.
Manchester Council Welcomes the Summit
Garry Bridges, the new leader of Manchester City Council, said hosting an event of this scale would have seemed unlikely only a few years ago.
He also expressed hope that the summit would provide an opportunity to showcase Manchester internationally and influence perceptions of the city among visiting leaders.
UK Has Hosted the G20 Before
This will not be the first time the UK has hosted the G20 leaders’ summit. London hosted the meeting in 2009, when the security operation was estimated to have cost around £7.2 million.
The 2027 summit will take place in Manchester, while other G20-related meetings and events are expected to be held across the UK throughout the year.
What Is the G20?
The G20 is an international forum that brings together the world’s major economies to discuss global economic and financial issues, along with wider areas of international cooperation.
The group consists of 19 countries along with the European Union and African Union. Together, its members represent around two-thirds of the global population and more than 85% of the world's wealth, according to the figures cited in the source report.
The G20 was established in 1999, initially with a focus on promoting international financial stability and economic cooperation.
