PlayStation’s Wolverine Takes a Bold Turn With Its First 18-Rated Superhero Game
PlayStation’s Wolverine Takes a Bold Turn With Its First 18-Rated Superhero Game
Sony is taking a major creative risk with Marvel’s Wolverine, its latest PlayStation 5 exclusive from Insomniac Games. Unlike the studio’s hugely successful Spider-Man series, the new title embraces a much darker tone, featuring graphic combat, blood and violence that has earned it an 18 rating in the UK.
The game puts players in control of Logan, better known as Wolverine, as he battles enemies using his trademark claws, healing abilities and a growing collection of combat skills.
Insomniac is best known for its Spider-Man games, which have sold around 50 million copies. That success has created high expectations for Wolverine, but the studio has deliberately chosen a very different direction this time.
Wolverine Brings Brutal Combat to the PS5
Combat is the biggest attraction of the game. Wolverine can attack enemies with his claws, perform powerful moves and build up a rage meter during fights.
Once the meter is charged, players can unleash devastating attacks and quickly take down multiple opponents. Rage can also be used to recover health, creating a system that encourages aggressive gameplay.
Stealth is available in certain situations, but the game generally allows players to take a more direct approach. New abilities and upgrades become available as the story progresses, making Wolverine increasingly powerful.
The main campaign takes roughly 15 to 20 hours, depending on how quickly players progress through the story.
A Major Change From Spider-Man
One of the biggest differences between Wolverine and Insomniac's Spider-Man games is the world design.
Spider-Man offered a huge open-world New York where players could freely explore, swing between buildings and discover activities. Wolverine takes a more linear and carefully controlled approach, focusing more heavily on story progression and set-piece moments.
That change could divide players who loved the freedom of Spider-Man.
The game also includes detailed environments and cinematic sequences between combat sections. While these moments help build the story, some players may feel that the frequent cutscenes interrupt the action.
Why Is Wolverine Rated 18?
Wolverine's higher age rating is one of the most talked-about aspects of the game.
The character has always been associated with a more aggressive side of the Marvel universe, and Insomniac has chosen to reflect that through its combat system. Battles feature blood and graphic injuries, making the game considerably more violent than the Spider-Man titles.
The decision also means the game has a smaller potential audience compared with family-friendly superhero games.
However, the developers believe the mature approach was necessary to properly represent Wolverine's character.
Strong Voice Performances Add to the Experience
The game isn't focused only on combat. A significant part of the experience comes through its cinematic storytelling and performances.
Liam McIntyre voices Wolverine, while Troy Baker delivers a prominent performance as Nathaniel Essex. Other characters, including Mystique, also play important roles in the story.
The performances have been praised for adding emotional depth to the characters, although the number of cinematic sequences may not appeal to everyone.
Can Wolverine Match Spider-Man's Success?
That is the biggest question surrounding the game.
Spider-Man changed expectations for superhero games when it launched in 2018, combining fast combat with an open-world New York and a highly accessible gameplay system.
Wolverine does not attempt to repeat that formula. Instead, it focuses on brutal close-range combat, a darker story and a more controlled adventure.
That could ultimately work in its favour because Wolverine has a very different personality and history from Spider-Man.
The character has also proved capable of attracting a huge mainstream audience. Deadpool & Wolverine, released in 2024, became a major box-office success, demonstrating the popularity of R-rated superhero entertainment.
The Verdict
Marvel’s Wolverine appears to be a confident departure from Insomniac's Spider-Man formula.
Its intense combat, strong performances and mature presentation give it a distinct identity, while the more linear structure and frequent cinematic sequences may not suit every player.
The game may not completely redefine the superhero genre in the same way Spider-Man did, but it could still become an important PlayStation exclusive by delivering the kind of darker Wolverine experience that fans have been waiting for.
