VinFast Plans Two New India-Specific EVs in Major Strategy Shift
VinFast Plans Two New India-Specific EVs as It Rethinks Local Strategy
New Delhi/Hanoi, September 10, 2026: Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast is preparing to develop two new electric cars specifically for the Indian market, according to people familiar with the company's plans.
The proposed models, internally known as VF X and VF Y, represent a change in VinFast's approach to India. Instead of primarily adapting its existing international models, the company is now looking at developing vehicles around the requirements and cost expectations of Indian buyers.
The plans are still at an early stage. VinFast has reportedly started preliminary discussions with Indian suppliers, although the final specifications, design and production plans could still change.
A VinFast spokesperson did not comment specifically on the new vehicles and said the company would announce new products at the appropriate time.
VinFast Wants to Build More Affordable EVs for India
One of the key ideas under consideration is a smaller and more affordable electric vehicle aimed at India's mass-market segment.
The VF X is being considered as an entry-level EV for India and could be priced below $12,000, according to people familiar with the plans.
The proposed vehicle would sit below the company's VF 6 crossover in size while offering more space than the compact two-door VF 3. The company is reportedly trying to balance interior space, vehicle size and affordability to better match Indian customer preferences.
VinFast's existing India lineup is positioned at significantly higher prices. The VF 6 starts at roughly $19,000, while the VF 7 begins at around $24,250.
Why VinFast Is Changing Its India EV Strategy
The strategy shift comes after VinFast reconsidered plans to manufacture some of its existing global models in India.
The company had earlier paused plans to locally manufacture the VF 3, VF 6 and VF 7 after determining that production costs could not be reduced enough to reach its targeted selling prices.
VinFast currently sells the VF 6 and VF 7 in India, with vehicles being brought in as kits from Vietnam and assembled at its Indian manufacturing facility.
The company has said it intends to continue assembling those two models in India.
The experience has encouraged VinFast to involve Indian suppliers much earlier in the development process for its next-generation India-focused products.
Indian Suppliers to Play a Bigger Role
VinFast has already begun discussions with suppliers in India regarding the proposed new models.
The company reportedly brought executives from Vietnam to India in August to meet around 200 local suppliers and discuss its plans for the country's growing EV market.
By working with domestic suppliers from the beginning, VinFast aims to better understand component costs and production economics before finalising the new vehicles.
The approach could also help the automaker use existing components, manufacturing tools and supplier capabilities available in India rather than developing everything independently.
VinFast Is Betting Heavily on India
India has become an increasingly important market in VinFast's international expansion plans.
The Vietnamese automaker has committed around $2 billion to its India operations and opened its first manufacturing plant outside Vietnam last year.
The facility initially has an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles, with the potential to increase capacity to 150,000 units.
VinFast has also received investment approval for the second phase of the plant's expansion.
The company wants India to become more than just a sales market. It is looking to develop the country into a regional manufacturing and export base for markets across South Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
India's EV Market Offers a Major Opportunity
The potential launch of a lower-priced EV comes as electric vehicle adoption in India continues to expand.
EVs currently account for more than 7% of total car sales, while the Indian government has set a long-term goal of increasing EV penetration to 30% by 2030.
A vehicle priced below $12,000 would put VinFast into one of the most competitive sections of India's electric car market, where domestic manufacturers such as Tata Motors already have a strong presence.
The segment could offer significant growth potential, but keeping costs low enough to attract mass-market buyers is likely to be one of the biggest challenges.
VinFast's India Expansion So Far
VinFast began selling vehicles in India in September 2025 and has so far sold around 10,000 vehicles, according to the information available in the report.
The company is backed by Vietnam's largest conglomerate, Vingroup, and has ambitions that extend beyond automobiles. Its broader India plans also include areas such as real estate, education and healthcare.
With the proposed VF X and VF Y, VinFast appears to be moving toward a more India-focused product strategy rather than relying mainly on modified versions of its international models.
What the New EV Strategy Could Mean
The development of India-specific EVs could help VinFast address one of the biggest challenges it has faced in the market: cost competitiveness.
Designing vehicles around Indian supplier networks and local consumer requirements from the start could give the company more flexibility on pricing and production.
However, the plans are still being evaluated, and VinFast has not yet officially announced the final specifications, launch timeline or pricing of the VF X and VF Y.
For now, the proposed models indicate that India is becoming an increasingly important part of VinFast's global EV strategy.
